A Survival Guide for Health Care Delivery - 2020 and Beyond

The futuristic road towards value and a "Virtual Health Organization." Our health care industry is going through unprecedented changes. The empowered consumer, demanding increased Value in an environment of a competing health care dollar, will fundamentally change how we do business. Transparency with accountability will become the new normal. Unpredictable and disruptive technology will abound. Historical relationships, such as the physician-patient relationship will change. Traditional thinking will be left behind. All stakeholders will need to become better engaged and involved as market forces such as telemedicine and AI will transform organizations into "Virtual Health Organizations" with the ability to provide "point of care patient care" achieving the end goal of true population management. This provocative keynote will address how health care will survive and prosper in this very strange environment. Are you ready to throw away the old textbooks and enter a whole new world? Dr. Berkowitz will discuss five key imperatives. It's not just Reform - It's SURVIVAL!

The Unique Challenges for Rural and Community Hospitals: How to Remain Successful and Community-Focused

All hospitals are facing unprecedented challenges with the pressures of cost reduction, maintaining quality / patient satisfaction, and developing integrated networks of care. The rural and community hospital has unique challenges in these arenas, which can ultimately effect the very viability of the institution. Trustees have more responsibilities than ever before. Critical decisions regarding service lines, medical staff availability and engagement and tertiary care support are now top of mind. Dr. Berkowitz will discuss these issues and offer best practices on how the community hospital can continue high quality care throughout these difficult times.

Practicing Medicine With the Smart Phone and Social Media

How to thrive with new technologies and new consumer expectations. Over the years, new technologies have transformed the practice of medicine. They have also have been disruptive to the status quo. What are the anticipated new technologies in the next several years, and how do we retool our practices and organizations to take maximum advantage of these new technologies? How do we more effectively evaluate new technologies for our organization? Dr. Berkowitz will discuss the role of five new, disruptive technologies and how to best incorporate them into the successful delivery of health care.

Might Your Next Doctor be a Computer?

The roles of AI, robotics and "Big Data" in the future practice of medicine. The growth in data accumulation, artificial intelligence (AI), and more sophisticated and dexterous robots have increased dramatically. In the very near future, artificial intelligence may exceed human intelligence. Robotic technique and skills may exceed that of the surgeon. Large super-computers, that have the ability to digest virtually every medical article ever written, will have the fund of knowledge to diagnose and manage better than any physician. "Big Data" will have the capabilities to analyze millions of patients. It sounds far-fetched, but these technologies continue to evolve at warp speed- exceeding Murphy's Law of doubling in capacity every 12-18 months. What might this new world look like? In this futuristic and thought-provoking presentation, Dr. Berkowitz will discuss how these futuristic realities, combined with other new technology like biologicals, genomics, and nanotechnology will change how medicine is practiced.

Clinician Engage Thyself. The New Practice of Medicine

The classical model of patient care puts the physician in the autocratic position as the "captain of the ship". The new health care models are drastically changing the roles and responsibilities of the physician, and the physician must assume new areas of responsibility that they "did not sign up for" in medical school. These areas bring new and exciting opportunities which physicians must engage, manage, and deliver. Dr. Berkowitz the expanded roles of the physician, both internal and external, in this new world.

The Expanding Role of the Physician Executive

The role and influence of the physician executive has come a long way in the last decade. Specifically, the role of the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) or Chief Physician Executive (CPE) has expanded in scope and influence. New opportunities now exist for the physician to have greater impact on the future of health care. How can we better select, groom and mentor these physician leaders? Dr. Berkowitz will discuss his experiences as a CMO over the last 25 years, his experience in mentoring these executives, as well as review "pearls" for present and future physician leaders.
